The IJN Tottori Maru, a name synonymous with wartime hardship, now rests beneath the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, offering a compelling dive site for technical divers. Built in the early 20th century as a cargo ship, the Tottori Maru was repurposed during World War II to transport troops and supplies for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its most infamous role, however, was as one of the “Hellships,” where Allied prisoners of war endured unimaginable suffering during transport.
On November 29, 1944, the Tottori Maru met its fate when it was sunk by the USS Hammerhead (SS-364), a Balao-class submarine of the United States Navy. The Hammerhead, armed with ten torpedo tubes and a 5-inch deck gun, successfully launched a torpedo attack that sent the Tottori Maru to the seafloor.
