DS Seacrest
Dive into History: Exploring the DS Seacrest Wreck
The DS Seacrest, also known as the “Scan Queen,” is a compelling and challenging dive site located in the Gulf of Thailand. This drillship, built in 1977, was tragically sunk during Typhoon Gay on November 3, 1989. The disaster resulted in the loss of 91 out of 97 crew members, making it one of the deadliest offshore drilling accidents in history.
Historical Significance
The DS Seacrest was drilling in the Platong gas field when Typhoon Gay struck unexpectedly. Despite weather forecasts, the Seacrest was not adequately prepared to face the typhoon. The ship capsized after being hit broadside by severe winds and waves, leading to significant loss of life and sparking major legal actions against its owner, Unocal.
The Wreck Today
The DS Seacrest now lies inverted at a depth of 75 meters, with its top at about 50 meters. The wreck offers full penetration opportunities, making it ideal for experienced technical divers. Its large structure, including the drilling derrick and superstructure, provides extensive exploration areas.
Dive Conditions
- Depth: The wreck rests at 75 meters, with the top at 50 meters.
- Visibility: Typically moderate to good, though conditions can vary.
- Currents: Generally mild but can change unexpectedly.
- Certification: Due to the depth and penetration aspects, following certifications are required: Normoxic Trimix Plus Diver or CCR Normoxic Trimix Plus Diver and Technical Wreck Diver
Marine Life
Over time, the Seacrest has evolved into a vibrant artificial reef, attracting diverse marine life. Divers can expect to encounter various fish species and other marine creatures inhabiting the wreck’s many crevices and structures.
