IJN Tottori Maru
Exploring the IJN Tottori Maru: A Dive into History
The IJN Tottori Maru, a name synonymous with wartime hardship, now rests beneath the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, offering a compelling dive site for technical divers. Built in the early 20th century as a cargo ship, the Tottori Maru was repurposed during World War II to transport troops and supplies for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its most infamous role, however, was as one of the “Hellships,” where Allied prisoners of war endured unimaginable suffering during transport.
On November 29, 1944, the Tottori Maru met its fate when it was sunk by the USS Hammerhead (SS-364), a Balao-class submarine of the United States Navy. The Hammerhead, armed with ten torpedo tubes and a 5-inch deck gun, successfully launched a torpedo attack that sent the Tottori Maru to the seafloor.
Tottori Maru today
Rediscovered years later, the wreck of the Tottori Maru lies at a depth accessible to experienced technical divers. The ship’s structure remains remarkably well-preserved, providing a unique underwater exploration experience. Divers can navigate through the cargo holds, engine rooms, and other sections of the ship, witnessing firsthand the transformation from a vessel of war to a vibrant artificial reef teeming with marine life.
Diving the Tottori Maru requires advanced skills and preparation. The dive site presents challenging conditions, including variable visibility and potentially strong currents. Technical diving gear, such as rebreathers and decompression setups, is essential. We offer guided expeditions that ensure safety and provide comprehensive historical briefings, enhancing the dive experience.
This dive site not only offers an adventure into the depths but also a profound connection to history. As a war grave, it is crucial to approach the Tottori Maru with respect and care, preserving its integrity for future generations.
