HTMS Chang
Discover the HTMS Chang: One of Thailand’s Premier Shipwreck Dives
The HTMS Chang, once the USS Lincoln County (LST-898), is Thailand’s largest and most captivating shipwreck dive site. Built in 1944, this vessel served in World War II and the Korean War before being transferred to the Royal Thai Navy in 1962. After nearly 50 years of service, it was decommissioned and intentionally sunk off the coast of Koh Chang on November 22, 2012, to create an artificial reef and a spectacular dive site.
The wreck now lies upright at a depth of about 30 meters, with the top structures as shallow as 12 meters, making it accessible to advanced and technical divers. Stretching 100 meters in length, the HTMS Chang offers extensive exploration opportunities, from cargo holds to the captain’s cabin.
Since its sinking, the HTMS Chang has become a thriving underwater ecosystem. Divers can encounter schools of trevally, barracuda, batfish, and lionfish. The wreck is adorned with hard and soft corals, sponges, and anemones, attracting a variety of marine life, including nudibranchs and shrimp. Night dives reveal nocturnal species such as squid and crabs.
Visibility ranges from 10 to 20 meters, with generally mild currents, making it a relatively easy dive for those with the proper certification and training. Divers are encouraged to respect the site as a historical and ecological treasure, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
